Francisco Carmona

Francisco Carmona, M.D., Ph.D.

Professor, University of Barcelona’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Francisco Carmona was born in Spain in 1959 and graduated from the University of Barcelona Faculty of Medicine in 1982. He became a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology and obtained his doctoral degree in 1991. 

His main areas of interest are benign diseases including gynecologic surgery, endometriosis, pelvic floor pathology, minimally invasive gynecological surgery, and genital transplantation. He performed the first single port hysterectomy in Spain and also the first uterine transplantations in Spain. 

Dr. Carmona is a member of the University of Barcelona’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as Professor from 2007 and the Chief of the Barcelona Hospital Clinic’s Gynecology Service and Director of the Endometriosis Unit. 

He published more than 160 papers in peer review journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet. His total IF is more than 800 and the mean IF per paper is almost 5 (1st Gynecology’s quartile) with 36 as h index. He has published more than 50 papers in journals without IF (12 in international journals). He has published more than 65 book chapters (9 in international works) and 8 complete books. He is a reviewer of almost 30 scientific journals including Human Reproduction and Fertility and Sterility. 

Dr. Carmona is a member of the Editorial Board of Gynecological Surgery and Medicina Clínica. He is Associate Editor Journal of Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain and Editor in Chief of Clínica e Investigación en Ginecología y Obstetricia. He is member of the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer and Associated Investigator of the Grup de Recerca Consolidat "Endocrinología Ginecológica y Reproducción Humana," recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Comissionat d'Universitats i Recerca).

He has been the Director of 6 Doctoral Thesis (one with European Mention) and participated in 9 Competitive Investigation Projects (in two  as Main Investigator (MI)) and in 16 Non- Competitive Investigation Projects (in all of them as MI). He has participated in 279 courses or congresses (95 international) with outstanding participation in 94 of them (51 international). He has given 297 lectures (118 in international events). 

Dr. Carmona is Académico Correspondiente by election of the Real Academia de Medicina de Cataluña. He is full member of different Scientific Societies, including Sociedad Española de Ginecología y Obstetricia (and its Endoscopia Ginecológica and Suelo Pélvico sections), European Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy (ESGE), Sociedad IberoAmericana de Endoscopia Ginecológica e Imagenología (SIAEGI), American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), European Endometriosis League (EEL) and World Endometriosis Society (WES). He is Founder Member of the Society for Endometriosis and Uterine Disorders (SEUD) (he was the President of the 2nd Congress of this Society), the Society for Clinical Advanced Anatomy (SCAA) and the Sociedad Española para el Estudio de los Miomas y la Endometriois(SEEME). He is ex-member of the Board Committee of the ESGE (he was the President of its 19th Congress), ex-member of the AAGL Board of Trustees (he was also the President of its 10th International Meeting), ex- member of the Executive Committee of the EEL and ex-member of the SIAEGI Executive Committee. He is member of the AAGL Advisory Committee, member of the SCAA Executive Committee and President of SEUD and SEEME. He is also WES Ambasseur.
