On March 7, 2023, Australian television personality and conservationist Bindi Irwin shared on Instagram that she’d been diagnosed with endometriosis and had surgery four days earlier. It was the first time Irwin had spoken publicly about having the disease that she’d been suffering from for a decade.
“There’s stigma around this awful disease,” Irwin wrote to her nearly six million followers. “I’m sharing my story for anyone who reads this & is quietly dealing with pain & no answers. Let this be your validation that your pain is real & you deserve help.”
Irwin made the 10,000-mile flight to New York City for surgery. Dr. Tamer Seckin, founder of the Seckin Endometriosis Center and co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound), removed more than 30 lesions.
Over the past year, Irwin has continued to tell her story through several avenues, including social media, People Magazine, and, just last month, TODAY.com. Her in-depth interview with TODAY.com included comments about her being honored this Friday, May 3, with EndoFound’s Blossom Award at the 12th Annual Blossom Ball in Manhattan.
“I am dedicating this incredibly kind recognition to everyone who has spent years feeling dismissed, unseen and undiagnosed,” Irwin said.
Also in that interview, Irwin also shared details about her symptoms, decision to have excision surgery, treatment plan, recovery, and status today. Read the interview with TODAY.com in its entirety.
