Dr. Harry Reich, a globally renowned pioneer in gynecologic surgery, serves as Honorary Medical Director Emeritus and Senior Medical Advisor to The Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound). Revolutionizing gynecologic surgery globally, he introduced groundbreaking advancements in laparoscopic techniques. Dr. Reich performed the first laparoscopic hysterectomy, pelvic lymphadenectomy for cancer, and excision of cul-de-sac endometriosis involving rectal resection. His methods set new standards for precision, patient care, and outcomes.

Dr. Tamer Seckin, EndoFound co-founder and Dr. Reich's former associate, established the Harry Reich Award to honor his dedication to endometriosis care and women's health. Specifically, the award recognizes specialists and scientists advancing practice, research, and advocacy. As part of EndoFound’s Scientific Advisory Council, Dr. Reich continues to inspire advancements in endometriosis care.

Notably, a tribute to his legacy, “On the Shoulders of Giants Through the Lens of the Laparoscope: Dr. Harry Reich—Empathy, Optics, and Courage,” was published in Surgical Technology International. The article highlights his transformative impact on modern medicine and minimally invasive surgery.

Foundations of a Visionary Surgeon in Gynecologic Surgery

Dr. Reich, born September 29, 1941, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, grew up in a family of doctors. Inspired by his parents, Drs. Sylvia and Sidney Reich, Dr. Reich also pursued medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree at Lehigh University in 1964 and graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1970. Rigorous training shaped his precision and surgical skills, which he refined through advanced residency programs, including at Boston Hospital for Women.

Innovating to Revolutionize Gynecologic Surgery Globally

During residency, Dr. Reich saw the untapped potential of laparoscopy. He transformed it from a diagnostic tool to a therapeutic method for complex conditions. Challenges, like complications in laparoscopic ovarian cyst drainage, became opportunities for improvement. For example, his introduction of “underwater laparoscopy” improved hemostasis and visualization.

In 1976, he opened his practice in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, despite skepticism from colleagues. There, he performed groundbreaking procedures like laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy, solidifying his role as a leader in minimally invasive surgery.

Pioneering Breakthroughs in Gynecologic Surgery Worldwide

Dr. Reich transformed gynecologic surgery with several pioneering advancements:

  • Endometriosis Treatment: He was one of the first to excise deep fibrotic endometriosis laparoscopically, improving fertility outcomes.

  • Tubo-Ovarian Abscess Management: He introduced minimally invasive techniques for tubo-ovarian abscesses, reducing the need for hysterectomies.

  • First Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: In 1988, he performed the first laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy.

  • Cancer Surgery: He expanded laparoscopy’s role in early-stage ovarian cancer care.

Advancing Patient Care Through Minimally Invasive Methods

Dr. Reich faced resistance from peers and institutions. For instance, in 1980, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital investigated his methods. Still, he proved their safety and efficacy. Early publishing efforts were rejected, but persistence brought widespread recognition.

Educating to Transform Gynecologic Surgery Globally

Dr. Reich’s passion for education drove him to mentor surgeons worldwide. In 1986, he co-chaired the first U.S. workshop on advanced laparoscopic surgery. Over the years, he trained hundreds of surgeons and introduced video documentation of surgeries to improve transparency and enhance knowledge sharing.

Global Impact and Legacy of a Surgical Pioneer

Dr. Reich conducted workshops and surgeries in more than 60 countries, cementing laparoscopy as the global standard in gynecology. In honor of his contributions to minimally invasive surgery, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2012.

Legacy and Recognition

Dr. Reich’s work revolutionized gynecologic surgery. His techniques reduced invasiveness, improved recovery times, and enhanced outcomes. Today, they remain the gold standard for treating severe endometriosis and complex conditions.

Reflections on Surgical Innovation

In the foreword to the 44th edition of Surgical Technology International, Dr. Reich reflects on the evolution of surgery, emphasizing the importance of ambidextrous skills and the foundational techniques underlying minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Looking ahead, he envisions a future where surgical skill balances the influence of industry, with the ultimate goal of eliminating laparotomy in favor of minimally invasive methods.

Dr. Harry Reich’s career embodies innovation, resilience, and empathy. By challenging traditional surgical practices and championing minimally invasive techniques, he transformed patient outcomes and set the stage for continued advancements in gynecologic and general surgery. His enduring legacy inspires medical professionals globally, underscoring the importance of revolutionizing gynecologic surgery globally to advance healthcare.
